Hot Cross Bun Recipe – Chat
Ingredients:
Dry:
4 c. bread flour
1/2c. Sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
Yeast Mix:
1 T. instant yeast
2 tsp. Sugar
1/2c. Warm water
Wet:
1/4 c. unsalted butter, melted
1 c. whole milk, warmed
2 large eggs, room temperature
1tsp. Vanilla
Add Ins:
1c. raisins or chocolate chips
For the crosses:
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 1/2 T. Water
For the glaze:
1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 T. milk
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions:
- Mix together yeast, sugar and warm water. Let sit and bubble.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the bread flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, warm milk, eggs and vanilla until combined.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture and yeast mixture. Mix until just combined, then stir in the raisins or chocolate chips.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and place them in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. In a small bowl, mix together the flour and water to make a paste for the crosses. Transfer the paste to a piping bag and pipe crosses onto the buns.
- Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- While the buns are baking, make the glaze by combining the powder sugar, milk and vanilla extract in a small bowl and whisk togther.
- Remove the buns from the oven and brush them with the glaze while still warm. Serve and enjoy!
